Thursday 24/09: THE BOXER REBELLION, TELEGRAPHS, ARE WE BROTHERS @ Nouveau Casino. The Boxer REbellion are a British alt.rock act, whose CD last year went to #4 on Brit album chart, #2 on alt.rock chart second to Kings of Leon, a few days after its release. They're often compared to Radiohead and the Verve.

Thursday 24/09: D.I.E./Le Grand Duc du Kansas Residence at La Feline (the best bar if you want your rock fast, hard, full of whiskey and vodka shots (the charismatic owner frequently walks around and pours them into your baby-bird gaping mouth). Friday 25/09: Punk concert at la Miroiterie squat, 5pm: So you want a glimpse of the real Paris punk underground scene? Check out this art squat at 88 rue de Menilmontant. Because of noise problems, this starts early, which is great because that still gives you time to swing by Planete Mars later for a wild friday night with Djay Indie Eclectique (D.I.E.) and friends. see below.

Friday 25/09: D.I.E. and guests at Planete Mars. If there's a dj in Paris who spins the best of 80s-90s-2000s indie rock, pop, mixed with soul, ska, and new wave, I don't know him/her yet. A real variety of stuff, ranging from Sonic Youth and Gradndaddy, to The Flaming Lips, Sparklehorse, Mudhoney, The Raveonettes, The Dirtbombs, the Decembrists, Etta James, and Doby Gray, 9pm-2am. New Music to check out: What I'm listenin' to

What I'm listening to at the moment...
In the process of reviewing the following for Popmatters (full-length reviews will be coming out there soon):
Scott H. Biram's recent Something's Wrong/Lost Forever Bloodshot Records release is his best so far. If you don't know him, he's one of a kind. He's an example of that dying breed of one-man-band. You'll be amazed this this sound is coming from one dude alone. And what's that sound? It's part growling of the hounds of hell, part blues, part gospel, part cow punk, part singer-songwriter. It's slow, it's fast, it's touching, it's wild. Stellar Song-writing. Here's a sample of the faster side: the track Judgment Day (yes, click link). Buy it here (you won't be sorry).

Next, I'm reviewing a fabulous compilation of old garage and rockabilly gems from Norton Records' I Still Hate CDs: Singles Collection 45 RPMs Vol. 2. Norton Records is an international phenomenon, re-issuing lost jewels of R&B, Garage, Rockabilly, pre-punk, and Lounge. Here's a sample of the collection I'm reviewing. Its Only Rock N' Roll – Guy Peellaert and Dominique Tarlé

If only walls could talk. Fortunately Dominique Tarlé's photographs tell all. Through October 30th, the Galerie de l'Instant presents "Rocks Off", a collection of works by possibly the best rock and roll photographer you've never heard of.

Its 1971. A nubile Keith Richards, pajamas settled to the edge of suggestiveness, lights a cigarette from a mysterious unsmiling blond. Click.

Mick Jagger, half sober, lounges on a Louis XVI banquet table littered with glasses as a heavy lidded Richards strums his guitar. Click.

Roger Daltry, Marianne Faithfull, and the incandescent Jimi Hendrix are among the subjects of Tarlé's debut photography exhibit in France. All disheveled hair and lascivious torsos, Tarlé captures consciously cool rock icons from uncannily simple perspectives. His obvious ease and, not only physical but spiritual proximity to his subjects sets Tarlé’s photography apart; he is as if possessed by the same spirit.

Don't take my word for it. Ask him. Every Saturday from 14h-19h, Tarlé holds court in person at the Galerie de l'Instant, answering what we want…no. Need to know.

Tarlé's 1971 backstage sojourn with the Rolling Stones coincided with the recording of "Exile on Main Street". By happy accident, the Musée Maillol is showing works of Guy Peellaert, the legendary comic book illustrator, surrealist painter, fellow champion of rock n’ roll and friend of the Stones.

“Bye Bye, Bye Baby, Bye Bye” is a posthumous retrospective of Peellaert’s contributions to pop culture (the Belgian artist passed away in 2008). The exhibit contains the original cover artwork for the Rolling Stones’ “It’s Only Rock N’ Roll”, and searingly honest commentary on America’s first pop stars. Peellaert’s tribute to Jerry Lee Lewis is a retablo-style painting, plastering a jailbait bride next to the howling pianist - lest we forget Lewis’ scandalous second claim to fame (hint: it’s not “Great Balls of Fire”). Peellaert’s own success in the form of the 1973 rock-pop satire, “Rock Dreams”, (co-authored by Nick Cohn, and the cover of which John Lennon allegedly had framed) refocused his work from BDs to album cover design. Peellaert resisted turning rock starts into golden calves; rather he shot skeptical sideways glances at fame. Peellaert was in on the joke.

The Musée Maillol’s intimate homage to this huge contributor to pop culture has been extended until October 26th. Jonesing for some of that old time rock and roll? Dominique Tarlé and Guy Peellaert will sooth your soul.

Secretly Canadian recordings' Magnolia Electric Company is fronted by the distinctive-voiced, morose soundscapes of Jason Molina. MEC was formerly Songs: Ohia until Molina changed the name in 2003. If you like the low-fi, lovelorn lyricism thing, this is for you. Darkness was never so sweet. Compare to Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy and My Morning Jacket, with whom Molina has also recorded. From "Lonesome Valley": "Out here the ghost wears the feathered crown of blues/And the sickle moon to watch over all the lost horizon/All through the lonesome valley, the lonesome valley."

Micah P. Johnson is different. A Johnny Cash lurks in the baleful baritone behind his boyish looks and slight build. The 27-year-old who bottomed out at 19, penniless and drug addled, today testifies with gorgeous indie folk (occasionally more rocked up) about love and self-destruction (what else?).
