July Calendar: Nouveau Casino and Maroquinerie hot garage lineups

A very strong July in Paris, especially for those with bluesy garage leanings. Some impressive hiphop at Noveau Casino's Colors Festival. (this is just the beginning. I'll be adding more little shows from places like la Feline)

1 July RZA (Ghostface Killah, from Wu Tang Clan)
So this is mostly an underground, indie, alt, punk whatever rock blog. But many of you readers, like I, have diverse tastes. If so, you know this artist, and you know you don't want to miss this opening of Nouveau Casino's Colors Festival. Also playing, anti-folksters The Bewitched hands, and dance-inducing Y.A.S., who have a fantastic reprise of "Stayin' Alive." Tickets here.

Fri, 3 July Djay Indie Eclectique/Grand Duc du Kansas at UFO bar
Displaced Chicago Djay Indie Eclectique/ Le Grand Duc du Kansas has unleashed some of the best dance garage, classic punk, rockandroll, and indie rock that can be found in the City of Lights. He digs deep into a unique repertoire built up from six years doing classic American roots music and New Rock shows. Some classics from the Sonics to The Clash, but a lot you will not hear in other mixes here.
UFO Bar, 49 rue JP Timbaud, 75011 Paris, Free
4 July Gonn/The Pupils
Who says Iowas do
esn't rock? Gonn is a classic (and I mean CLASSIC) garage rock band from Keokuk, Iowa. You may not have heard them, but if you've heard any of those Nuggetsy 60s garage/pscyhadelic collections, you've heard their cult favorite "Blackout of Gretely." They've done a couple of reunion tours in the last two decades and here's another. Gonn is joined by
The Pupils (Dischord Records, U.S.), featuring members of post-hardcore band Lungfish.

Sat, 4 July Fucked Up
That is not a call to party or an observation about the world, the French presidency, or the dude sitting at the bar; it's a nihilist punk band from Toronto. Could push these frogs to transform themselves into raucous rosbifs--for a night. Paris asked for a mosh pit (be careful what you wish for). Too bad this show duels with The Gonn/Pupils at La M aroq. Can't we all just get along?
Nouveau Casino

7 July The Gories and the Oblivians
The Gories were a mid-80s to early 90s Detroit blues garage punk band that split up in 1992. You may know many of the bands their members then went on to form: The Dirtbombs, the Demolition Dollrods, Darkest Hours. They are greatly appreciated in the underground garage culture.
Well-suited to the bill, The Oblivians were a well-known 90s American blues garage-punk band from Memphis. The Oblivians' Eric Friedl recorded an album with Jay Reatard in 2
007.
La Maroquinerie

8 July, Why?
Bay area alt.hiphop and indie rock artists. Not terribly well known but have a strong underground following. Buzzing well.

9 July, New Bomb Turks
Veteran garage punks from Columbus, Ohio. These guys put on a good show.
Nouveau Casino

10 July The Warlocks
LA neo-pscyhadelic band with a good buzz.
La Maroquinerie.

12 July, The Varukers: Classic British Punk: They are celebrating their 30th bday with a tour. Founded in 1979.
Also: RATOS DI PORAO (Mythique punk hardcore du Brazil)
FLEAS & LICE (Punk Hardcore Hollandais)
DEAD SUBVERTS (Punk Hardcore Anglais)
2SICKMONCKEYS (Punk Hardcore Anglais)
FREDAG DEN 13:e (D-beat de Suède)
La pena Festayre, Corentin Cariou

13 July Here We go Magic (Brooklyn) and Reza
Herewegomagic is one of those Brooklyn Animal Collective indie-experimental folk-rock-whatever groups. Interesting. Here's their Myspace.
La Maroquinerie

Mon 13 July Asaf Avidan and the Mojos
Asaf Avidan grew up between Jamaica and Israel. Weird folk-rock hybrid with vocals a la Janis Joplin (or is that Aerosmith?). Could be interesting. Click for video.
Nouveau Casino

Thur 16 July Animal Collective
Publish Post

I've written about these experimentalists several times on this site. I find them pleasantly ponderable.
La Cigale

Sat, 18 July Los Chicros w/ Sleepy Sun
Los Chicros is a band built on catchy pop-rock minor synth-sewn hooks. Their last album was produced by Yann Arnaud, the dude from Air and Phoenix. It shows. For fans of the aforementioned. Also playing the interesting California psych-rock team Sleepy Sun.

Fri, 31 July : Classic Punk Rock: The Adolescents
La Pena Festayre, Corentin Cariou

Fri 31 July: Naughty By Nature
Whoa, big guns of classic hip hop on par (almost) with Public Enemy or Wu Tang. They burst into the hiphop and pop world with their eponymous 1991 album and a crossover hit in O.P.P., which memorably sampled The Jackson 5's ABC and incorporated a groovin' live keyboard. They consistently produced catchy beats with old-school ghetto realism that told tales of social deprivation, ghetto anger, angst, and empathy. I'm not a huge hiphop fan, but I like these guys.

10 Years Ago: White Stripes, Joe Strummer

1999: The White Stripes' debut, by Jayson Harsin, from PopMatters.com
Jack White saw the light, and it was blues. Lucky for us.Add Image

Before launching the White Stripes in the summer of ‘97, Jack White played drums for Detroit cowpunk outfit Goober & the Peas. Contrary to what one might assume, the transition to the White Stripes was not such a violent shift. The low-fi blues-garage-rock-and-roll bomb that the White Stripes served up shared a proudly stripped-down honesty with its cowpunk predecessor. You probably couldn’t get more fundamental, honest rock music if you gave a rattle to a naked, wailing baby. Read on...

1999: Joe Strummer's Rock Art and the X-Ray Style
Jo
e Strummer, one of the most famous front men in the last 30 years of rock history, had disappeared from spotlights for ten years after his first solo album, Earthquake Weather, into a black hole of regret, self-doubt, and disgust with what he saw as the emptiness of rock ‘n’ roll fame. He called this period the “wilderness years”. He was not unproductive, writing for Mick Jones’s Big Audio Dynamite, producing the Pogues, composing and contributing to film soundtracks, and DJing ("London Calling” was the show), but he nevertheless lacked sustained purpose. Then in the mid-’90s, Strummer assembled a backing band of poly-instrumentalists dubbed the Mescaleros. Read on...

Friday: The Fleshtones at Nouveau Casino

Classic CBGBS-era NY rock band.
The Fleshtones
One of the seminal CBGB's era NYC bands, the Fleshtones' first concert was in 1979. Their sound was never the loud pop punk of the Ramones or anything like seminal British punk, but rather a mix of surf, 60s garage, and rocknroll. They're a lot of fun if you like that kind of straight up stuff, especially organs and fuzz guitar. A cult following for forty years should deserve some cred, no?

June calendar (in Progress)

Photobucket

Yo La Tengo, June 4, Alhambra. 90s American indie rock was arguably defined by three majorly influential bands: Sonic Youth, Pavement, and Yo La Tengo. If you don't know them, check out this show.

DIE, Djay Indie Eclectique, Le Grand Duc du Kansas at Planete Mars. Parisnormale's founder and usually solo contributor/Popmatter's critic will be kicking out the jams at one of the greatest little rock dives in the Bastille area. Fresh back from Chicago with new vinyl jewels, expect everything from Curtis Mayfield and Aretha 45's, Johnny Cash, to the Deadly Snakes, The Only Ones, Social Distortion, Le Tigre, Buck 65, Brigitte Bardot, Andrew Bird, and the Legendary Shackshakers. Bop, Groove, Bang your hand. DIE!
Garage, Rockabilly/Country, Punk, Indie, Soul

Metro Bastille/Voltaire/Ledru Rollin

SOCIAL DISTORTION
Social D was part of the foundational Orange County, LA punk scene back in 1978. Their original sound was described as ‘the punk Rolling Stones', and their style after 1983 became increasingly inflected by American roots, rockabilly and country, as did that of other LA punk acts X and The Gun Club. Thirty years later, after frontman Mike Ness's descent into heroin addiction and recovery, and founding guitarist Dennis Dannel's unexpected fatal brain aneurysm in 2000, Mike Ness bears the torch of one of the most influential, lyrically rugged but sonically melodic punk bands of all time.
Mon 8 June , 28.60€, 7.30pm. Bataclan, 50 bd Voltaire, 11th. M°Oberkampf. 01.43.14.35.35.www.bataclan.fr

The Only Ones
If I weren't going to Social Distortion this same night, I'd check out this band. They had a huge New Wave/Punk hit in 1978 with "Another Girl, Another Planet." It has rightly been called the greatest rock single ever recorded.

Fishbone
80s early 90s self-described as y - -.
They had a serious buzz to them in the late 80s early 90s, disappeared and are back. No doubt worthy of a few of your hard-earned roubles.
Tues June 9
Le Trabendo

The Rifles
High Quality Brit Pop, influenced by the Jam, Oasis, and the Strokes.
Their second full-length "The Great Escape" came out in January. They're praised for clever but not groundbreaking songwriting (as if there's really that much arguably groundbreaking out there anyway and as if groundbreaking always means "good"). Do you want to contemplate sounds or swivel and sing along?
Tues June 9

Inrocks Indie Club at La Maroquinerie
The Maccabees, Red Light Company

"The Maccabees are an indie rock band from Brighton, England. Debuting in 2004 with the You Make Noise, I Make Sandwiches EP (released on Haircut Records) they scored a minor indie hit in 2006 with the influenced single Latchmere (released on Fierce Panda Records) before inking a deal with the Polydor imprint (and former home of The Cure) Fiction Records." La Mécanique Ondulatoire

A modestly named outfit for all you mod-garage-punk nerds: "The New Christs were originally formed by Radio Birdman and New Race vocalist Rob Younger after he was offered the support spot on Iggy Pop’s Australian tour of 1984. The other members had played in groups such as Celibate Rifles, Lime Spiders and Hoodoo Gurus. The tour proved a success and the band stayed together, recording the two singles Like A Curse and Born Out Of Time for Sydney independent label Citadel Records." (from Last.fm)

The Gaslight Anthem
A slightly punky rock group from Atlanta that is charming ears across the globe. I don't think I can beat this blurb: "one critic wrote, “The Gaslight Anthem are like something out of speculative fiction: this is what pop music would be if Springsteen hadn’t listened to his producer, let the Ramones record ‘Hungry Heart,’ and launched the C.B.G.B.’ers into megastardom.” (from Last.fm)

DIE/Djay Indie Eclectique, the Grand Duc du Kansas will be doing a soul-garage blues night at the fabulous little bar for rock and soul, Le Baron Samedi, 12 rue des Goncourts
Ruth Brown, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Wanda Jackson, Aretha, Mod galore, Sonics, Black Keys, Hendrixx, Dirt Bombs, King Khan, etc. Shake that thing, 9pm-2am.
12, rue des Goncourt/75011 Paris, M: Goncourt

The Mummies
Part of the Born Bad Garage Fest. Highly Recommended if you have a garage fetish: "The Mummies are a band from San Bruno, California, with influences of , 1950s and 1960s bands such as The Sonics and more contemporary garage punk bands like Thee Mighty Caesars. Their first show was at the Chi Chi club in San Francisco in December of 1988. The Mummies are especially known for their matching mummy costumes they wore on stage and their impertinent attitude that they brought with them. They have also been known for releasing their music only on vinyl for many years, but have finally given in to the CD format in the 2000’s." From Last.fm

It's La Feline's Birthday, and DIE has the honor of spinning it. If you want your world rocked, don't miss this one, ladies and germs. 10h30-2. Washington Deadcats Rockabilly play first.

Fete de la Musique
Tons of Stuff, but I'd recommend the following:
Finally Punk at Mecanique Ondulatoire: "
“This is the band Bikini Kill was trying to inspire with all that riot grrl stuff. Four girls from Austin, TX playing their own style of punk that sound like equal parts Mika Miko, Lungleg and Meltdown. Hilarious, true and liberating. This is just as fresh-sounding as those Kleenex 7”s you are hunting for, and it’s happening today!” -Tobi Vail
Fans of the Raincoats, Kleenex/LiliPUT, and the Slits you wont be disappointed."
