ART BRUT

UK's AB arrive on the heels of their third studio album release Art Brut vs Satan, which was recorded with Pixies' demigod Frank Black. Since forming in 2004, AB have garnered critical acclaim and considerable numbers of happy listeners bopping and chuckling to their simple pop punk riffs and clever lyrics, heavily ironic and even self-parodic. Witness a morsel they wrote five minutes after forming: 'I wanna be the boy/ The man that writes the song/ That makes Israel and Palestine/ Get along'. ('Formed a Band'). If postmodern art is characterised mainly by irony, pastiche, and playfulness, AB are its exemplars. Also playing, The Blood Arm. JH

En première partie The Blood Arm.

DEERHUNTER

Atlanta's experimental noise-rockers Deerhunter are as well-known for their live appearances as for their recorded sounds. Frontman Bradford Cox suffers from Marfan's syndrome, a genetic disorder that results in abnormally long and thin limbs. Cox's distinctive physique is further enhanced by his vocals, which have been likened to that of the Fall's Mark E. Smith and, in their experimental modes, to Yoko Ono.  Add to Cox's presence an often quasi-industrial guitar rhythm, sometimes complemented by whammy guitar interventions, other times altogether removed for a kind of slowed-down space rock ethos, and you have a trip-of-a-spectacle. Deerhunter's latest EP Rainwater Cassette Exchange is set to be released May 18 in the U.S. Also playing, Women. JH

COLD WAR KIDS

CWKs are a Fullerton, CA band who, a bit like their forebears Spoon and Modest Mouse, have built on 90s indie rock by incorporating elements of blues, funk, and alt.rap into a distinctive whole. On other songs their influences vary from Tom Waits to the White Stripes.  Since their emergence in 2004,  CWKs have been steadily increasing their buzz through virtuosic, energetic live performances and lead singer Nathan Willet's soulful voice and Bukowski-esque lyrics. There are few indie bands with such universal critical acclaim. JH

Entre leurs mains la pop devient rugueuse, le rock hybride, la soul écorchée et le blues fiévreux. C'est sur scène que le groupe dévoile l'étendue de son talent.

Wed 27 May, 28.50€, 7.30pm. La Cigale, 120 bd de Rochechouart, 18th. M°Pigalle. 01.49.25.81.75.www.lacigale.fr

SOCIAL DISTORTION

Social D was part of the foundational Orange County, LA punk scene back in 1978. Their original sound was described as ‘the punk Rolling Stones', and their style after 1983 became increasingly inflected by American roots, rockabilly and country, as did that of other LA punk acts X and The Gun Club. Thirty years later, after frontman Mike Ness's descent into heroin addiction and recovery, and founding guitarist Dennis Dannel's unexpected fatal brain aneurysm in 2000, Mike Ness bears the torch of one of the most influential, lyrically rugged but sonically melodic punk bands of all time. JH

Mon 8 June , 28.60€, 7.30pm. Bataclan, 50 bd Voltaire, 11th. M°Oberkampf. 01.43.14.35.35.www.bataclan.fr

Review: Alt.country King Steve Earle's Tribute to Townes VanZandt

If you wince when you hear "country," well, so did I when I was your age. Then I started wondering why all these former punk rockers were recording country albums.Witness Jon Langford from the Mekons (one of the kings of alt- or insurgent country), John Doe of X, and Alejandro Escovedo of the True Believers. One could go on. Indie singer-songwriters also have either recorded country-tinged albums or songs on albums, and here I'm thinking of Conor Oberst and M. Ward, or more specifically Ward's collaboration with Zooey Deschanel as She and Him. We're not talking about saccharine pop country of Garth Brooks and all the other Nashville idiots, just as we don't shout hosannahs for mainstream pop, RnB or rap--at least not on this blog. If you've got a dark streak to you, a critical streak, an idea that things are not really alright out there, that life is f'in hard as much as fun and games, then if you don't know classic and alt.country, get thee to Johnny Cash (and end up, eventually, with some Steve Earle). See Below.

Fischerspooner Review

For you electroclash lovers out there...

Artf*cks Unite!

A lazer beam from a sultry siren
Pneumatic bass and panned saxophone
A young girl and an astronaut babbling
The purr of synths and video games beeping
That’s entertainment
That’s entertainment

A fair number of the artists associated with the electroclash moniker meld new wave, hip-hop, and ambient and punk (usually vocals) elements. Le Tigre’s drum-machined rock-raps, for example, have riot grrl roots (and thus punk influences). The foul temptress Peaches’ electro base is mediated by rap and punk/rock (or on her latest release, even a vocal flirtation with soul). Others lumped into electroclash also shift these variables in one way or another. That has always left Fischerspooner, despite the commonality of a basic electro fetish, a bit apart. Their relationship to late ‘70s and ‘80s electronic pioneers is much more mediated by New Wave electro-pop than deconstructed pop becoming ambient, industrial, and or techno; more OMD, Scritti Politti, Human League, and early Depeche Mode than, say, Art of Noise or Nitzer Ebb. This much awaited third album, Entertainment, finds Fischerspooner going more electro pop than ever before. Continue...
