March Calendar (under construction)

Here is the March Calendar for Paris with some commentary. Excuse the lack of usual critical comments about the incoming bands/artists. Writing overload at the moment. IN addition, I grow weary of posting here without any reactions from readers. Over 320 readers subscribe to this blog's updates now (to say nothing of those who frequent the blog without subscribing). Comment, discuss, criticize! Otherwise, this blog will disappear. I have too many other writing commitments.

Those indie-garage-rockabilly-vintage soul-hillbilly-new wave lovers in Paris--do you want indie meetups suggested for dj and concert nights, where you can meet like-minded music lovers in Paris? Speak! This blog can organize you.
Without further ado. My picks for March. We'll begin with the first week and I'll add the rest asap.

Sat 7 March Bataclain
Sisters of Mercy
Hard to say how many of you are interested in this pioneering Goth, New Wave, and increasingly industrial act. They were more New Wave in the beginning. Now, well, listen for yourself if you don't already know. There's still a considerable New Wave presence in their Myspace selections). All these new electronic pop bands, but also techno and electronic music in general begin with Kraftwerk and have a trajectory through these largely dark British bands. It's not my thing now, but in high school, in addition to the guitar-based Circle Jerks, the Dead Kennedys, Husker Du, the Ramones, and Black Flag, there was Joy Division, the Cure, The Cult, Echo and the Bunnymen, Love and rokets, the Smiths, Bauhaus, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and the Sisters of Mercy. Old School Goth and New Wave? Auld lang Syne, my friends.

Mon 9 March, La Maroquinerie
White Lies
Formerly known as Fear of Flying, this UK group (Fiction Records) had their debut album, To Lose My Life debut at numero uno on the UK albums chart. WL brings a kind of dance-inducing indie pop, but not exactly in league with Los Campesinos, Hot Hot Heat, and Franz Ferdinand. There's a darkness to them, indicated by the title of the debut. It's danceable in the way that some of these synthpop Brit bands of the eighties were. And times there's a bass and drums that are reminiscent of the late Joy Division. But they layer more indie pop guitars on it at times. The kind of ironic layering one could find in the Smiths (albeit perhaps more often for them an irony between sound and lyrics as in "Girlfriend in a Coma"). Witness "Unfinished Business": "You've got blood on your hands, and I know that it's get off your [load?] and dance like we used to." They've been touring with Snow Patrol. Myspace here.

Mon 9 March, La Fleche D'Or

Tues 10 March, le Zenith (parc de la Villette)
Fall Out Boy w/The Sounds
Actually I'm a big The Sounds fan. Fall Out Boy, well they've come along way since playing at Knights of Columbus halls in the Chicago suburbs circa 2005. Pop punk, emo-core, Get Up Kids-influenced. Like a lot of pop punk and indie rock guitar bands (esp. from the 90s), FOB has increasingly experimented with synthesizers. It sounds more and more mainstream pop to this listener, and less and less interesting to him.
The Sounds are a breed that can give you revved up ass-kicking guitar-on-synth edgy pop.
REcommended for The Sounds (check the track Living in America).

Wed 11 March, la Maroquinerie
Titus Andronicus
From "Titus Andronicus is an indie rock band which formed in Glen Rock, New Jersey, United States in 2005. They consist of Patrick Stickles (vocals, guitar), Ian O’Neil (guitar), Ian Graetzer (bass), Andrew Cedermark (keyboards, vocals) and Eric Harm (drums). The band is named after the 1584 play by William Shakespeare.

In the beginning, there were only three people in the band. At one point, there were eleven people in the band. Today, there are five people in the band. They take their name from a Shakespearean tragedy. Titus Andronicus recorded an EP at Marcata Recording that summer. The EP in question will see official release soon, but not anywhere in North America. A seven inch or two is/are said to be coming out in the next few months. Titus Andronicus practice at Ian’s house. Titus Andronicus like to scream and carry on at excessive volume. Titus Andronicus like songs which are fast more than songs which are slow. Titus Andronicus think slow songs are okay sometimes. Titus Andronicus never sing about love, only hate. Titus Andronicus have no hope for the future. Titus Andronicus believe only in nothingness. Everyone in Titus Andronicus was born to die. Titus Andronicus crave your approval but will settle for your utter disdain. Titus Andronicus can be reached at: “These New Jersey guys make music that makes me happy. And before too long, all the world shall know their joy."

Friday March 13: Djay Indie Eclectique (DIE) New Wave-Old Wave soiree at UFO. New Wave/Old Wave dance party: Devo, Adam Ant, the Cure, the Human League, etc. meet Midnight Juggernauts, MGMT, Ting Tings, She Wants Revenge, the Sounds, etc. ARe you ready to DIE? Free shot to all who can name the Cure songs I'll play.

Sat 14 March, L'Olympia
Jason Mraz
American Billboard Top 10-bustin singer-songwriter, followed by some indie fans. A bit precious, but maybe you could say that about a lot of talented singer-songwriters.

Mon 16 March, Cafe de la Danse
Vic Chestnutt w/Elf Power (U.S.)
Chestnutt is a peculiar American singer-songwriter, a cripple in fact, who against the grain of Dame Fortune manages to strum some beautiful songs famous for their poetry and his inimitable voice.
Elf Power is a member of the famous Elephant 6 recording collective that features the well-known Of Montreal, as well as bands like Olivia Tremor Control. Kevin Barnes of Of Montreal, for example, has contributed to past EP albums. EP has always been at the forefront of indie rock evolution, and their ninth album, In a Cave, finds them combining pop and Krautrock, buzz-amped Mercury Rev sounds, Mellotrones, cellos, accordions, and driving guitars. But they've been recording an album with Vic Chestnutt due out next fall. Hence the double bill.
Here's a sample of a Vic Chesnutt song I love.
Soft Picasso

Tues, 17 March L'Olympia
Franz Ferdinand
If you don't know these guys, I can't help you. You either love them or hate them. Happy St. Patty's Day!

Fri 27 March, Planete Mars, Rue Keller near Bastille: Djay Grand Duc du Kansas (DIE's alter ego) will be bringing the best and often obscure roots of rocknroll: sax rock, rockabilly, surf, early Soul, first generation Ska, Garage, Mod, classic punk, and contemporary revivalists, from Eli Paperboy Reed, to Eagles of Death Metal, and the Bellrays. Miss it at your own pleasuredome rocknroll school expense.
