Jay's Best Indie Christmas Music in Video

Fa la la la la, my friends. Xmas is doomed to be musical. How 'bout takin' a break from "Deck the Halls" (don't get me wrong: there's a place for caroling soft spot in my Tiny Tim-loving heart of hearts)? Like everything else these days music has a major visual element (as strange as that sounds). Here's my shot at a list of top Xmas music videos.

Some are straight-up music videos, others extracts from films or even TV specials, which you may want to rent (or find the other parts on Youtube). Many of them are quirky, some underground. All of them "rock," on some level. More could certainly be added, and this hierarchy could easily be shuffled around. May ye find something new here, remember something you forgot, or just have a good laugh!

20. Kurtis Blow, "Christmas Rapping." Wow, 1980, this was that seminal moment when rap emerged between funk and disco. Blondie's "Rapture" (which came out one year later and was mistakenly referred to by some critics as the first rap song ) sounds a lot like this.

Recommended: The (International) Noise Conspiracy

The (International) Noise Conspiracy
Politically conscious garage punk standouts, Sweden’s T(I)NC tour album four, The Cross of My Calling, released last month and produced by legendary Def Jam founder Rick Rubin. Their sound is more influenced by psychedelic keyboards of late 60s garage, soul vocals, and funk rhythms than, say, a garage revival band like the Hives. Inspired by folk singer Phil Ochs’ quote that a rock band should be a combination of Elvis and Che Guevera, they write often heady (and some more cliché) screeds against U.S. foreign policy, global capitalism, and empty consumer life. One of their videos begins with the script “If I Can’t Dance I Don’t Want Your Revolution.” As was the case with social-politically conscious bands like The Clash, The Dead Kennedys, The Gang of Four, and Rage Against the Machine, fans need not always pay attention to their lyrics to dig their overall sound. Some fans might respond, “I don’t want your revolution, but I’ll dance to it.” Indeed, their songs are thoroughly pogo-able. But whether or not all the fans buy the entire package, T(I)NC deserve credit for making that package marketable with a catchy, energetic sound.

December Picks:INternational Noise Conspiracy, The NoTwist, Against Me!, Gogol Bordello

Happy Holidays from Parisnormale!

For a review of this holiday classic, click here.
3 Dec. Mark Lanegan: Lanegan's old band The Screaming Trees were a fairly big part of the Seattle sound of the early 90s, shadowed of course by Nirvana. Since then he's gone on a more singer-songwriter path, venturing into some gospel territory.
Le Trabendo

4 Dec. Department of Eagles, with Frightened Rabbit
Worth investigating.
La Maroquinerie

8 Dec. The Black Angels
L'Elysee Montmartre

9 Dec. Nouvelle Vague
Five years ago they were hot to trot with their cocktail lounge reprises of Dead Kennedys (Too Drunk to Fuck), XTC (Making Plans for Nigel), etc. Still cool stuff, but they've been unable to break any new ground.
Theatre de l'Alhambra

9 Dec. Lykke Li
This Scandanavian singer has impressed some with her voice and spare songs. Others reserve judgment. Worth a listen.
Le Trabendo

9 Dec. Land Of Talk with opening band Think About Life. Land of Talk is growing by leaps and bounds. They are currently touring Canada with indie rock legends Broken Social Scene and playing back-up support for their US tour. Some critics have dubbed their first solo EP "some are lakes" as one of the best records of the year.
Main D'Oeuvres (St. Ouen)

10 Dec. The NoTwist
A hot indie act these days. This German outfit moves from rough metal-tinged rock to jazz-electro rock. The group has been re-mixed by a number of artists.
Le Trabendo

10 Dec. Against Me!
Friendly Punk, not thrash. Somewhere between Pennywise and the Sex Pistols. The songs are sometimes socially conscious, as in "Americans Abroad."
L'Elysee Montmartre

11 Dec. Mad Sin
Punk-Psychobilly. Get your dose of tattoos, pompadours, and pogos. Should be fun.

<Photobucket12 DEC FRIDAY. Djay Indie Eclectique Birthday Party at the new UFO bar.
There is really no other dj in Paris who brings you an eclectic mix of early American rock and roll, soul, funk, French yeye, British classic punk, New Wave, alt.country, indie rock, garage, and contemporary indie electropop. Come help him celebrate his birthday, dance and make merry.

This is the new much bigger bar from the team over at Orange Mecanique. It's just a few doors down from their other bar, and a couple of doors down from the intersection with Ave. Parmentier. 8h30pm-1h30am (Note Djay Indie Eclectique will be back at the UFO for a pre-Xmas bash Friday Dec. 19)

GB put on a helluva show last spring. Now they're back. GB’s slogan is "Gypsy Punk Revolution." They serve a mesmerizing combination of spectacle and musical mayhem. Traditional Balkan folk sounds and rhythms are accompanied by more typical punk guitar, drums, shredded acoustic guitar, and scruffy vocals from what looks like the Balkan Iggy Pop — Ukrainian-born-DJ-actor-gypsy-punk-icon, Eugene Hütz. GB are to traditional gypsy as the Pogues were to Irish folk. The gypsy sound is a natural for punkification, since it’s already often wild and fast in its roots (as many have already learned from the exports of Goran Bregovic). Add a wild, bare-chested, svelt but sinewy mustachioed front man, pouring wine on his shoulders and drinking from the bottle, and they make something unique and unforgettable.
Tues 16 Dec. Bataclan, 19h30

16 Dec. The (International) Noise Conspiracy
This much talked about Swedish "psycadelic punk" bunch give you a cross-historical melange of styles, mixed up, revved up, slowed down, red pills and blue pills--take them all! Yet more proof, if you needed any, that Scandanavia is the motor of international rock and indie experimentation aujourd'hui.
La Maroquinerie, 19h30

18 Dec. Inrocks Indie Club Spécial Wichita at La Maroquinerie
Los Campesinos!, Those Dancing Days, Sky Larkin, Lovvers: Los Campesinos takes twee to a more racous level. A lively show from these heady, melodic popsmiths last time at Nouveau Casino. This will be a treat.
La Maroquinerie. 19h30

19 DEC. FRIDAY: DJAY INDIE ECLECTIQUE GARAGE-HARD INDIE- AND ELECTROPOP XMAS PARTY. Great indie xmas hits (at least The Kinks' "Father Christmas")and the usual Rock on HIGH! ROCK A FEW SHOTS BEFORE YOU HEAD BACK TO THE FAMILY FOR THE HOLIDAYS. YOU'LL NEED IT. TRUST ME. BAR UFO, 49 RUE JP TIMBAUD, 8H30PM-1H30AM.

16 Jan. Of Montreal and Animal Collective
Early warning. This will be a fantastic show from this genius electropop songsmith and that bunch known for injecting African sounds into the tired indie rock culture. Check digitick.com
Bataclan
